Suffusion 3.9.0: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '

I was recently baffled by the behaviour of one of my wordpress sites.

The site only loaded its header and then stopped. Further investigation showed that the site was using Suffusion 3.9.0 as a theme.

I have previously experienced many problems with various software with version x.x.0, so I suspected a bug in the theme.

A further runtime debugging showed the following error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘

After backing up the site, I manually upgraded the site to Suffusion 3.9.2 and voila … I was right. Everything was back to normal.

One last touch was updating the credit line on the footer and I was happy again 🙂

How to remove 'Suffusion WordPress theme by Sayontan Sinha' link from Footer

If you recently upgraded your Suffusion theme to version 3.9.0, you will notice that the ‘Suffusion WordPress theme by Sayontan Sinha’ link will appear in your WordPress footer.

The previous workaround, which is editing the code in actions.php in the functions folder won’t work because of the changes in the Suffusion theme version 3.9.0.

In the new version, you can still remove the ‘Suffusion WordPress theme by Sayontan Sinha’ link from your WordPress footer by editing the site-footer.php as follows:

1. Locate ../wp-content/themes/suffusion/custom/site-footer.php in your WordPress installation directory;

2. Locate <td class=”cred-right”><a href=”http://www.aquoid.com/news/themes/suffusion/”>Suffusion theme by Sayontan Sinha</a></td> in line 30.

3. Change <a href=”http://www.aquoid.com/news/themes/suffusion/”>Suffusion theme by Sayontan Sinha</a> with something else, for example: &nbsp; (space)

4. Enjoy!
